From 1 August 2018 onwards, researchers can submit proposals for curiosity-driven, fundamental research in two new instruments in the open competition of the NWO Domain Science: one instrument for small-scale projects and investments and one for large-scale projects.
The new funding instruments are open for research proposals with a question in or overlapping the fields of earth sciences, astronomy, chemistry, computer science, life sciences, physics and mathematics.
The new Open Competition replaces the old funding instruments:
The KLEIN grant offers researchers the possibility to elaborate creative and risky ideas and to realise scientific innovations that can form the basis for the research themes of the future. There are three categories of KLEIN grants: KLEIN-1 (1 scientific position), KLEIN-2 (2 scientific positions in collaboration) and KLEIN-0 (investments) that are assessed in competition with each other. The total available budget is €25.5 mln and proposals can be submitted at any time.
The GROOT grants are intended for consortia in which research groups create added value compared to, for instance, individual KLEIN grants through collaboration. They offer researchers the possibility to strengthen or extend excellent, challenging and innovative lines of research. The Call for Proposals will be open for proposals once every two years and includes a round of pre-proposals. The deadline for submitting pre-proposals in the first round is on 12 February 2019. The available budget is €25 mln.
