What is a 3MT competition?

Developed by The University of Queensland, the Three Minute Thesis competition or 3MT, is an annual competition held at over 900 universities across more than 85 countries worldwide.

Participants are challenged to present their PhD research in just three minutes to a non-specialist audience. The 3MT is also a video competition: presentations are recorded on video and can be shared with others, even after the competition.

See this link as an example of a PHD pitch video. NB. this video is not yet completely according to the UvA 3MT video criteria, but very close.

Why should I take part in the UvA 3MT Competition?

  • The chance to win a UvA-wide and a global competition among PhD students;
  • The opportunity to receive a video made with a professional videographer about your research;
  • The opportunity to receive personal coaching and training to present your research;
  • Prize funds worth of 1000 EUR and 500 EUR for the UvA top 3 PhD videos;
  • Recognition and visibility of your research among academic and non-academic audiences.

Group Pitch Training 29 April

As part of the 2021 UvA 3MT Competition, we offer all participants the opportunity to take part in a Group Pitch Training on Thursday 29 April 10:00 - 12:00. The training will be provided by experienced pitch trainer Sheila Schenkel of Best3Minutes (https://best3minutes.com/about/). Selection procedure

Competitions are opened and organized first at Faculty-level. Each faculty selects 10 PhDs who get one-on-one coaching and a 3-minute (creative) video production. Based on these videos, each Faculty jury selects 3 finalists. These finalists continue to the UvA finals. The UvA Grand Jury selects a winner and 2 runners-up (second/third place). The winner will have a special 3MT video recorded right after the UvA finals, which will be submitted to U21 for the global competition.
